!990 – Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Board of Directors.Arrington wanted to have a $5 million dollar tax increase – this would generate $65 million. The planning of the facility was completed in 1987 however depleted funds delayed the construction of the institute.The group then hired the American History Workshop for outside help. The Task Force however was not completely satisfied with the plans by Bond, Ryder, James and Associations.

ěond, Ryder, James and Associates – architectural group from New York hired for designing the facility.In May 1986, the Civil Rights Museum task force was created to work with architects for the design of the building.Soon after the City Committee invested another $2.5 million in the development of the institute. November 1985 – Announced the purchase of the building site for $500,000.Ĝonflicts: Money – Birmingham was in a recession, internal dispute – disagreement within the study committee over address and role of archives.Octo– The Study Committee filed a report endorsing the idea instead of a museum they turn the site into a education/research center focusing on three main components: exhibitions, education and archives.Created to establish the nature of the museum along with the steps needed to implement the museum.

What is BCRI? The BCRI is a museum designed to commemorate the people and events associated to the civil rights movement.
